Bassa College Faculty, Staff Threaten Boycott Over Salary Arrears

BUCHANAN, October 18 (LINA) -The faculty and staff of the Grand Bassa Community College (GBCC) in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County have threatened to stage a boycott of work beginning Monday, October 19, in demand of three-month salaries, totaling about US$75,000.

According to a circular issued by the faculty association recently, the decision stemmed from the college’s delay to release their salaries since July.

It also states that the association had earlier planned a boycott in May, but the board and administration of the college appealed to them to continue classes, assuring them that their arrears would be settled.

Meanwhile, the President of the college, Dr. Levi Zangar, admitted on a local radio talk show that he received the circular, but said the action on the part of the faculty and staff will seriously embarrass the college and poor parents who cannot afford tuition at other colleges for their kids.

Zangar argued that the salary in question was accrued by the college during the Ebola crisis when other institutions were not paying staff and GBCC had promised to pay 50 percent of salaries to faculty and staff of the institution.

He further said they were informed that when the US$400, 000 allotted to the college during the County Council Sitting is released, their arrears will be disbursed.

Zangar said the amount being demanded by the faculty and staff is about US$75,000.
