By John N. Bropleh, LINA Maryland, Grand Kru Counties Correspondent
HARPER, October 5 (LINA) – The Superintendent of Tarbou District in the Ivory Coast has made an impassioned appeal to the Governments of Liberia and Ivory Coast to organize a military force in the district to dislodge heavily armed criminals residing on the VF-Island situated between both countries.
Maryland County Superintendent Betsy Toe who led a high power delegation of local officials from Maryland and River Gee Counties to Ivory Coast, quoted the Tarbou Superintendent.as saying that the criminals are habitually terrorizing peaceful citizens of the two countries who ply the Cavalla River near the V-Island.
Toe told the Liberia News Agency (LINA) in Harper on Monday that the delegation traveled to Tarbou to discuss with their Ivorian counterpart cross-border security issues as well as the reopening of the border between both countries to enhance food security, commerce and social cohesion, amongst others.
She further quoted the Tarbou Superintendent. whose name was withheld, as saying that the criminals held two Ivorians hostage and used them as slaves for several months before they managed to escape.
“He told us that there is always this confusion whenever there is shooting on the island as to whether it came from the Liberian side of the border or the Ivorian side, as 40 percent of the Island is in Liberia while 60 percent of it is in Ivory Coast,” Superintendent. Betsy explained.
