UNDP Environmental Specialist Wants Counties Tackle Sea Erosion

 BUCHANAN, October 5 (LINA) –A UNDP Energy and Environment Program Specialist is calling on stakeholders in counties hit by sea erosion to allot money from their County and Social Development Funds to tackle this natural disaster.

Speaking at the close of a two-day Disaster Management Workshop for eight coastal counties organized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Buchanan at the weekend, Moses Massah said tackling natural disasters such as sea erosion requires money and as such counties that are affected should begin taking the matter in their hands by allotting money to mitigate this natural hazard.  

The two-day workshop was aimed at allowing the participants share their experiences with their colleagues, especially on how they have been able to mitigate the impact of sea erosion and floods in their respective counties as well as the displacement of citizens.

Also speaking at the workshop, Grand Bassa County outgoing Superintendent Etweda Cooper appealed to the Legislative Caucuses of all counties to step up the allotment in the national budget for disaster management as the CDF is insufficient to run the day-to-day activities of the counties.

In November 2013, the Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy commissioned the construction of the pilot Breakwater Revetment System in Buchanan with funding from the Liberian Government, UNDP and other partners.
