China Reopens Agric Demo Center In Bong

By Philip T. Singbah, LINA Bong County Correspondent

GBARNGA, September 30 (LINA) - The Chinese Government has reopened the Agriculture Demonstration Center-Lonpeng-Tech in Suakoko District, Bong County following months of abrupt of closure.

Lonpeng-Tech Agriculture Demonstration Center was constructed in 2008 and started operation in 2011 by a group of Chinese Agriculture Technicians at the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI) to help improve the agriculture sector of Liberia.

Speaking at the reopening ceremony, the Deputy General Manager of the center, Kopi Zang praised residents of Suakoko and the Liberian government for their continuous support aimed at strengthening the agriculture sector of the country.

Mr. Kopi, however, attributed the closure of the Center to the outbreak of the Ebola virus in the country.

He added that the team at Lonpeng-Tech is currently cultivating about 400 acres of low and upland rice, vegetables and other agricultural varieties to support the center’s research initiative.

Speaking earlier, CARI interim Team Leader Aaron Marshall lauded the Chinese Government for reopening the Center and encouraged them to get involved mostly in plowing the soil, especially in Kpatawee.

Marshal reiterated CARI’s plan to work with the Chinese team at the center to enhance the Institute research activities in meeting the demands of Liberian farmers.
