Wesseh Vows To Seek UL Budget Increase In 2016/17 Fiscal Year

By Calvin Brooks, LINA

MONROVIA, September 20 (LINA) - River Gee County Senator Conmany B. Wesseh has promised students of the University of Liberia (UL) that he will propose an increment of the university budget in the National Budget for fiscal year 2016/17.

Senator Wesseh stated that while it is good for student organizations to organize scholarship fund drive to raise money to provide financial aid to destitute students, the process is not sustainable.

The River Gee County Senator made the remarks Friday at a scholarship fund drive for University of Liberia Student Union (ULSU) held at the main campus auditorium on Capitol Hill in Monrovia.

He noted that if the UL’s budget increment is passed by law, it will ensure that the university has all the necessary equipment and materials for effective learning at the state-run institution.

According to him, he will lobby with members of the two houses at the Legislature to ensure increment of UL allotment in the next budget.

Senator Wesseh than urged students to strive for excellence in their studies, noting that university students are the light in the larger society tasked to help ensure social, economic and political development.

It can be recalled that UL proposed budget for fiscal year 2015/16 was US$28 million, but was reduced to US$15 million, posing serious challenges to the university’s operation, according to the administration.
