Strengthen Inclusive Education, UMU Official Urges
By Calvin Brooks, LINA

MONROVIA, September 12(LINA) -The Chairman for Social Affairs of the United Methodist University (UMU) is calling for the strengthening of inclusive education in schools to empower children with disabilities in Liberia.

Sam Slewion noted that the empowerment of children with disabilities in the education setting would go a long way in developing competent men and women who are physically challenged to contribute to the socio-economic development of the nation.

Slewion made the call Thursday in an interview with Liberia News Agency on the margins of a one-day inclusive education conference organized by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with Handicap International held in the Sinkor suburb of Monrovia.

He stressed that certain portion of the nation’s population such as the disabled community should not be abandoned educationally, noting that they are part of the human resource of the country.

He observed that the progress of any country depends on the development of the human resource capacity, including people with disabilities who, he noted, are also critical in the building process of the country.

Slewion stressed that empowering children with disabilities educationally will require the collective efforts of government and the education sector working along with the physically challenged children.
