Nimba Authorities Chart Border Security Plans
By Wellington G. Patrick, LINA Nimba County Correspondent

SANNIQUELLIE, September 10 (LINA) – Local authorities in Nimba County in partnership with non-governmental organizations are crafting a security contingency plan to protect the county's borders as Guinea and Ivory Coast prepare for presidential elections.

The plan covers border surveillance, scrutiny, conflict management and awareness. It also includes Water and Sanitation (WASH) activities, to ensure that those entering and leaving the county are Ebola free.

The Media Coordinator of the County Ebola Task Force, Paul K. Karnue, told the Liberia News Agency Wednesday that the plan is a precautionary measure to ensure that the borders are never threatened by citizens of the three countries as the two friendly nations conduct presidential elections in October this year.

The forum, which took place at the Tubman Administration Building in Sanniquellie Tuesday, brought together local and international NGOs, civil society organizations and local authorities of line ministries and agencies.

Guinea, led by President Alpha Condè is expected to conduct presidential elections on October 11, while Alassane Quattara’s Cote d’Ivoire will hold elections on October 25 this year.

Both countries have experienced political unrest since their last elections in 2010, and as such local authorities of the three countries say they are concerned about the security of their borders as the two countries go to polls.
