Paramount Chief Denies Allegation
VOINJAMA, Feb 25 (LINA) -The Paramount Chief of Bondi and Wobomai Clans in Voinjama District, Lofa County, Oldman Tarnue Baysah Pellewoyan, has refuted an allegation that male school-age children were abandoning schools in the district to join the Poro society.
Oldman Pellewoyan noted that at no time have male students abandoned school to join the Poro Society, adding that they as parents are aware that their children need quality education to meet future challenges.
According to the Liberia News Agency Oldman Baysah made the clarification Monday at the Voinjama administration building where he commented on the matter.
The paramount chief said even though the Poro Society was currently in session in the district, it is only meant for those who are not attending school.
He indicated that based on the children’s right to education, after the closure of the 2013/2014 school year, male students could be allowed to enroll in the Poro Society.
There were recent widespread rumors that traditional Zoes of Voinjama District were encouraging male students to abandon schools in order to join the Poro society, something Oldman Pellewoyan describe as false and misleading.
