Sabay Wants Errant Election Workers Prosecuted
By Philip T. Singbah LINA, Bong County Correspondent

GBARNGA, August 27 (LINA) – An aspirant in the 2014 Special Senatorial Election in Bong County is calling for the prosecution of poll workers who were involved in electoral malpractices that led to the victory of Senator Jewel Taylor.

Mr. James Sabay’s call comes in the wake of a ruling by the Supreme Court ordering the National Elections Commission (NEC) to conduct a re-run of the election in three polling precincts in District # 7 in Bong County.

The ruling follows a complaint filed by candidate Henrique Tokpa six months ago, alleging irregularities that led to Senator Taylor winning the election.

Speaking to the Liberia News Agency in Gbarnga Thursday, Sabay said the NEC needs to take such action to deter elections workers from engaging in malpractices in future elections.

He called on NEC to put in place measures to counter-check the records of those expressing interest to work with the Commission, adding: “The gross irregularities that characterized the senatorial election in Bong had the propensity to cause chaos in the county.”

Meanwhile, Sabay has lauded Dr. Tokpa for his decision to step aside from the re-run, describing it as in the best interest of peace and stability.
