Bong Youth Lauds Pres. Sirleaf for Rejecting ‘Christian State’

By Philip T. Singbah LINA Bong County Correspondent

GBARNGA, August 22 (LINA) - A youth of Gbarnga, Bong County, Sheik Sheriff, has commended President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for rejecting the proposition calling for Liberia to be classified a ‘Christian State.’

In March this year, delegates at the National Constitutional Conference in Gbarnga overwhelmingly endorsed Proposition 24 to Christianize Liberia, igniting mixed reactions by Liberians across the country.

Speaking to the Liberia News Agency in Gbarnga recently, Sheriff said President Sirleaf’s rejection of that proposition demonstrates her desire to ensure the division of State and religion, something that will promote lasting peace and stability.

He added that since Liberia’s Independence in 1847, all religious groups have peacefully co-existed and wondered why some Liberians were proffering the argument to Christianize the country.

Sheriff hoped that the Legislature will concur with the president.
