Liberia Goes 35 Days In Ebola Free Count-down
By Wilfred Gortor

MONROVIA, August 18 (LINA) – Liberia has made a journey of 35 days in its 42 days countdown to regain its Ebola-free status, the head of the Incident Management System (IMS), Tolbert Nyenswah, has disclosed.

According to Mr. Nyenswah, this means that the nation will complete its 42 day count-down on August 28, at which time it is expected to again be declared Ebola-free by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Nyenswah told the Liberia News Agency (LINA) Tuesday that to ensure that the country regains its status the IMS has increased its engagement along borders with its neighbors Guinea and Sierra Leone.

According to the Deputy Health Minister, the IMS has also intensified and strengthened its community engagement to ensure that people are sensitized to prevent a resurgence of the virus.

Nyenswah disclosed that Sierra Leone did not report any case, while Guinea reported only two cases as of last week; something which, he noted, is welcome news for Liberia.

Liberia was declared Ebola-free by WHO on May 9, 2015, but this status was jeopardized on June 29 by the emergence of a new case involving a 17 year-old boy whose corpse tested positive of the virus 48 days after the nation was declared free of the virus.

The Ebola Virus Disease, since it was first discovered in 1976, has always resurfaced after it is contained.
