Senator Wants Health Authorities Speak On Free Medicare
By Richard Stephens, LINA

MONROVIA, August 11 (LINA) - Grand Bassa County Senator Nyonblee Lawrence has requested plenary to invite the Chief Medical Officer of Liberia, Dr. Francis Kateh, to explain how the free medical program of government is working
across the country.

A communication submitted by the lawmaker Tuesday to plenary also seeks the appearance of Health Minister Dr. Bernice Dahn to present the health plan to be supported by donor funding.

She explained that in the 2015/2016 budget, a total of US$72 million was allotted to the health sector, which represents 12 percent of the National Budget covering mostly salaries.

Senator Lawrence stated that up to present, regional and major hospitals in the country do not have x-ray machines, the most needed and cheapest medical equipment.

She added that drugs are never available and that patients have to purchase almost everything before treatment because the revenue envelope is insufficient.

She also noted that all government health facilities in the country are charging for health services when they should be free.
