Rep. Chambers Wants 10, 000 Strong UNMIL Force Stay In Liberia
By Hilary Vasco Wiagbe
MONROVIA, August 6(LINA)-The Chairman of the House-Standing Committee on National Defense, Dr. Bhofal Chambers, has requested that at least 10, 000 of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) security force remain in the country during and after the 2017 general
Chambers said his request was based on the fact that the United Nations has done “extremely well” in ensuring and fostering peace in Liberia and the sub-region, stressing that the need exists now more than ever before for the maintenance of such peaceful atmosphere to avoid its derailment.
The lawmaker’s request was contained in a letter to House Speaker J. Alex Tyler, dated August 4, 2015 and read in Session on Thursday, seeking the indulgence of his colleagues to write the UN through the Special Representative of the Secretary General to ensure that a sizeable component of its security force is kept on the ground when
effecting its draw-down.
Concluding, the Maryland County Representative emphasized: “You may agree with me that the issue of elections is a delicate matter,. If it is processed wrongly or fraudulently, it could lead to violence, gross polarization and/or political uncertainty.”
After it was read, Plenary sent the communication to the House Committees on Foreign Affairs, National Defense and National Security for scrutiny to report within two weeks.
