Gbarpolu Red Cross Stresses Girls Protection In Schools

GBARMA, August 2 (LINA) -The Gbarpolu Chapter of the Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) has revamped the girls units in some schools in Gbarpolu County.

The girls units which are now functioning in schools in Bopolu and Gbarma Districts, comprise of 110 female students, 110 parents and five teachers who are serving as school focal persons

An LNRCS release also disclosed that to effectively coordinate the activities of the units, the LNRCS chapter recently conducted an intensive training of the various representatives serving in the units.

The release further disclosed that the girls unit is charged with the responsibility of providing increased space to female students and also ensure that they have equal access to express their views on issue affecting their wellbeing.

The release noted that the LNRCS also intends to establish school girls units in other parts of the county to reporton instances of violence and abuses against female students by instructors in schools and communities.

The release quotes LNRCS Chapter Field Coordinator Mr. Seth Tarweh as saying that most female students get pregnant in school due to lack of proper information about what contraceptives can do in protecting them from unwanted pregnancy.
