“Liberia Is Still A Great Nation,” Says VP Boakai

MONROVIA, July 17 (LINA) - Vice President Joseph N. Boakai has extolled recipients of the Golden Image Awards and urged them to serve as role models for the promotion of world peace.

He said “as a nation we must strive to uphold and promote our cultural values and practices,” underscoring that culture is a dynamic phenomenon that continues to evolve with time and circumstances.

Vice President Boakai made the commendation Thursday at the Monrovia City Hall in Sinkor when he delivered the keynote address at the Arts and Cultural Event of the Golden Image Awards sponsored by the Liberia Crusaders for Peace.

“Culture defines a people and how they live,” VP Boakai noted, adding, “the Government is fully aware of the need for plotting efficient and effective action plans that will reinforce and streamline our national cultural policy and that this policy formulation is informed by our rich cultural history and experiences.”

"Liberia is still a great nation despite the reservations some may have about some practices ingrained in our cultural baggage," and called on Liberians to celebrate those who have stood out to give back.

Reverend Trevor Cockings of the United Kingdom-based His Church International, a British Philanthropist and Humanitarian, was awarded the distinguished International Humanitarian Award.

Rev. Cockings is also in the country to receive one of Liberia’s honored distinctions at a special investiture ceremony which will be performed by the President of Liberia, a release from the Office of the Vice President said.

Rev. Cockings has been behind the efforts of Vice President Boakai to bring relief supplies, including food and non-food items, to those in need in Liberia.
