By Hilary Vasco Wiagbe, LINA

MONROVIA, July 9 (LINA) - A Bill titled the Electricity Law of Liberia 2015 has been submitted to the National Legislature by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for passage into law.

President Sirleaf, in a communication to House Speaker J. Alex Tyler dated July 6 and read in Session Thursday, noted that the Bill when enacted into law shall establish the legal and regulatory framework for the generation, distribution and sale of electricity in Liberia.

It also sets the framework for Liberia’s import and export of electricity, according to the Liberian Chief Executive.

The President further indicated that the bill is in furtherance of and supports implementation of the National Energy Policy of Liberia.

The goals of the National Energy Policy include expanding on a sustainable basis, the availability of electricity services with the aim of attaining universal service and promoting regional and international cooperation in electricity trade and investment.

Following the reading of the Bill, Plenary forwarded it to the Committees on Energy, State Enterprises, Public Utilities and Judiciary for review and recommendation, with the mandate to report in one week.
