SANNIQUELLIE, July 4 (LINA) – The Agriculture Coordinator for Lofa and Nimba counties of the Building Resources Across Community (BRAC), a local NGO, has urged Liberians to embrace backyard gardening and poultry rearing.
Yanquoi Coleguwor made the call in Sanniquellie recently at a one-day agriculture training organized by BRAC at the local offices of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
Over 75 participants trained in “Backyard Gardening and Poultry Rearing” at the workshop organized by BRAC with support from the British people held under the theme: "Reducing Hunger in Rural Areas of Liberia”.
Coleguwor said if Liberian families invest more in gardening and poultry rearing, the nation will not only reduce hunger, but parents will increase the nutritional levels of their children.
He argued that many Liberian children are malnourished as a result of high level consumption of can meats, adding that those food lack quality diet for healthy body growth.
Coleguwor, however, pointed out that bad road network in rural parts is a major barrier to farmers supplying the markets and called on government to rehabilitate feeder roads and give loans to farmer cooperatives to boost agriculture production.
