Karnplay City To Demolish Pit Latrines

By Wellington G Patrick, LINA Nimba County Correspondent

KARNPLAY, July 3 (LINA) - The Municipal Council of Karnplay City, Nimba County has resolved to demolish pit latrines scattered across the city owing to the health hazard they pose to the residents.

Few months ago, the District Health Officer (DHO) of Gbehlay District explained to stakeholders the danger pit latrines pose to the health of the citizens of the district and encouraged them to prioritize flush toilets.

Making the disclosure to the Liberia News Agency (LINA) in Karnplay Friday, City Mayor Evelyn Gweh said the authority has informed residents of the council’s planned demolition exercise of public pit latrines in communities.

Ms. Gweh told LINA that the government and partners are discouraging the use of pit latrines in favor of flush toilet, describing it as a modern method of reducing community pollution by toilet.

She said the City Council has cautioned residents and partners of the government who are engaged in the construction of pit latrines in the city to refrain as it will not deviate from its demolition plan on the basis of sympathy.
