Africare Outlines Progress In Maternal Health
By Philip T. Singbah, LINA Bong County Correspondent
GBARNGA, July 2 (LINA) – AFRICARE Liberia Country Director Earnest Gaie has hailed significant improvements in responding to maternal health in Bong County since the construction of maternal homes at Africare clinics across the county.
Speaking to the Liberia News Agency at the dedication of the seventh maternal home in Handii, Fuamah District, Bong County, Gaie noted the improvement was a result of access to maternal homes at clinics.
Gaie said there is an unprecedented decline in home delivery by Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) in various towns and villages where Africare operates, noting that Africare has also realized an increase in referral of pregnant women from clinics to Phebe and C.B. Dunbar hospitals.
He lauded the efforts of the TBAs for their resilience in ensuring that maternal mortality is reduced, adding, “We are succeeding in reducing maternal deaths because of the cooperation and commitment of the traditional midwives… they are real partners to our work.”
Gaie called on the traditional midwives and residents of Fuamah District to take advantage of the facilities to further strengthen the fight against maternal deaths and to reduce the barriers to health facility delivery.
He disclosed that as part of efforts to further motivate the TBAs, Africare has trained them in tailoring and tie-dying to enable them generate money through the production and sale of bed sheets for the homes.
