DEA Burns Illicit Drugs Valued US$243k In Bong

By Philip T. Singbah, LINA Bong County Correspondent

GBARNGA, June 29 (LINA) - The Bong County Detachment of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has burned about 2,756 kilograms of marijuana in Gbarnga, Bong County.

The commander of the DEA in Bong County, Darius Paye, told the Liberia News Agency (LINA) that the drugs were arrested between June 2014 to June 2015, and are valued at over US$243,000.

Paye said the exercise leading to the arrest of the drugs was part of a countywide crackdown on drug traffickers, noting that the drugs were smuggled from within the county and neighboring Nimba, Lofa and Grand Bassa counties.

He said some of the traffickers were arrested at Farm Gate in Bong County while others were arrested on board vehicles bound for Monrovia and as a result of tipoff given the DEA by citizens in the county.

The DEA local official explained that the burning of the drugs is a signal to those who smuggle, sell and use drugs that there will be no tolerance for drug-related crimes in the county.

Paye disclosed that some of the traffickers who were arrested during the crackdown have been forwarded to the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court in Gbarnga awaiting trial.
