Official Says Marriage Registration Hampered in Maryland
By John Bropleh-LINA Maryland County Correspondent
HARPER, June 21 (LINA) –The Registrar of Deeds and Marriages in Maryland County has said the lack of decentralization is hampering marriage registration at the Maryland County branch of the National Marriage Registry.
Mr. Roosevelt Nyafore told the Liberia News Agency (LINA) in an interview via mobile phone Saturday that the situation can be attributed to failure to exercise an official will to decentralize the functions of the agency.
He told LINA that since he took over the office three years ago, the registration of marriage documents has been done in Monrovia, and explained that it is cost-intensive for married couples in Maryland County.
Mr. Nyafore noted that couples usually pay huge transportation fares of up to L$4,000 to travel to Monrovia to process marriage documents.
Meanwhile, the Maryland County Marriage Registrar is appealing to central government to decentralize the registration of marriage documents to save would-be couples the strain of traveling to Monrovia to process marriage documents.
