Liberian Envoy Rates UNHCR-ECOWAS Partnership ‘Strategic’

MONROVIA, June 18 (LINA) - Liberia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh, has described as “strategic” the signing of a partnership accord between the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja, Nigeria.

Ambassador Conteh, who represented the Dean of the ECOWAS Ambassadors at the signing ceremony in Abuja, Nigeria, explained that “it would afford all stakeholders to get a better understanding of the legal complexities of these lingering problems with multifarious causes.”

According to a dispatch from the Liberian Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, Conteh named the causes of refugee crisis as civil wars, post-electoral violence, border porosity and the ambiguities in nationality laws.

He also noted that the signing of a partnership between the UNHCR and the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice (ECCJ) would help ECOWAS Member States and their partners to further comprehend the complex rules for the attribution of nationality in addressing the problems of refugees, IDPs and statelessness.

To implement their agreement, the UNHCR and ECCJ envision a number of activities over the next three years, including the training of staff, judges, and lawyers in the region who may bring cases before the ECCJ on behalf of refugees, asylum-seekers, returnees, IDPs, stateless persons and those at risk of statelessness.
