Arcelor Mittal Workers Union, NWUL Condemn Redundancy Action

By Johnson Bobby Liway, LINA Grand Bassa County Correspondent

BUCHANAN, June 14 (LINA) - The Workers Union of Arcelor Mittal in collaboration with the National Workers Union of Liberia has condemned action taken by the mining firm to redundant Liberians in its employ.

During a mass meeting held with affected workers of the company on the grounds of the Arcelor Mittal Hospital over the weekend, the two groups said that while discussions were still being held between the workers union, Ministry of Labor (MOL) and the company, management has disregarded the MOL mandate and carried out its redundancy plan.

During the mass meeting, a communication written to AML by the Labor Ministry dated March 3, 2015 was read stopping Mittal from carrying out the redundancy until all concessions were made and both parties are satisfied.

The unions said there was no listing of affected workers and package forwarded to them for perusal by Mittal management and urged affected workers to keep off Mittal’s facilities until the issues can be addressed appropriately.

Meanwhile, it was resolved that all letters issued by Arcelor Mittal management to workers be handed over to the Arcelor Mittal Workers Union deputy secretary general who will return same to the Human Resource Department of the company as a sign of protest and no affected employee should receive package from the bank.
