Pres. Sirleaf Describes G-7 Summit As Successful

MONROVIA, June 10 (LINA) - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has said the just-ended 41st G-7 Summit held in Schloss Elmau, Germany was “successful”.

According to an Executive Mansion release, the Liberian leader made the statement when she addressed journalists at the Roberts International Airport late Tuesday evening upon her return to the country from participating in the Summit.

The Chief Executive said government is committed to fighting poverty and creating opportunities and equity for all Liberians.

She also said her Administration will continue to attract partners who are generously interested in the reconstruction of the country’s infrastructure and health sectors.

In a determination to support African nations in their reform efforts and consequently strengthen peace and security, growth and sustainable development on the continent, the leaders of the G-7 invited several African heads of state and government to join them on the second day of the summit in what is known as the G-7 outreach meeting.

African heads of state and government who participated in the outreach meeting were Liberia’s President Sirleaf, newly-inaugurated Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, Senegal’s President and current ECOWAS chair Macky Sall, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and Tunisia’s President Beji Caid Essebsi.

Together with them, the G-7 leaders engaged in a wide-range dialogue on Africa and global policy issues.

The G-7 is an informal forum of heads of state and government of seven industrialized nations which includes France, Italy, Japan, United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada and host Germany.

As a consequence of the oil and financial crisis, the heads of state and government of the six largest industrial nations held their first World Economic Summit in 1975.

Canada joined the group in 1976, while Russia joined in 1998 but is suspended for after it annexed Crimea last year. The European Union is also a member.
