Swedish Envoy Upbeat About County Service Centers
By Ballah M. Kollie, LINA

MONROVIA, June 8 (LINA) –The Ambassador of Sweden to Liberia, Sofia Strand, has expressed optimism that the County Service Centers which are part of the Deconcentration platform will serve as a vehicle to develop a coordinated, effective and accountable service delivery.

She indicated that effective and responsive service delivery that brings about the active participation of citizens and communities is a lesson learnt from developed countries, including Sweden.

The Swedish envoy made the statement over the weekend in an interview with the Liberia News Agency on the margins of the certification program of the first batch of over 30 trainees of the Grand Bassa County Service Center held at a local hotel in Monrovia.

Ambassador Strand also hoped that the Centers will become places where women and men, boys and girls, the young and old as well as the disabled are served with
respect, transparency and integrity.

“The County Service Centers are to serve as good examples of how public officials interact and develop services together with citizens and communities,” Madam Strand emphasized.

Strand noted the cardinal role played by the provision of services at county and district levels, adding, “This lesson was demonstrated and proven to be helpful during the Ebola fight.”

The presence of the Government of Sweden in Liberia is felt through the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) that is, among other activities, involved in the rehabilitation of feeder roads in several counties in Liberia.

SIDA is also partnering with government to implement the newly-launched deconcentration and decentralization programs.

The program is intended to empower locals to take over the governance of their respective counties where they will issue documents, certificates, permits, and licenses and report to central government annually.
