UN SRSG Opts For Increased Maintenance Of Self-help Initiatives

By Chris Nyenapee, LINA Grand Gedeh County Correspondent

ZWEDRU, June 6 (LINA) – The United Nations Secretary General’s Special Representative, Karin Landgren has called for maintenance of self- help initiatives and increased participation in development activities by citizens.

Landgren noted that the involvement of citizens in these initiatives is cardinal to the maintenance of peace and security in Liberia as UNMIL draws down.

The UNSRSG made the assertion in Zwedru recently during a meeting with the county’s local authorities and other stakeholders to discuss issues relevant to the pending departure of UNMIL and mechanisms being deployed to ensure peace as UNMIL draws down.

Meanwhile, SRSG Landgren has lauded the county authority and citizens for their role in the fight against Ebola, and urged them to continue adhering to preventive measures put in place by health authorities during this post-Ebola era to avoid a resurgence of the virus.

She said though there has been no Security Council decision on the recent request from several quarters for UNMIL’s draw down to be postponed, the entire security sector needs to be supported to ensure a safe environment for investment, farming, education and commerce amongst others.

“I am confident that the security sector is bound to thrive and succeed if all citizens fully support the government to make it work just as they did during the Ebola crisis,” Landgren stressed.

Briefing the UN envoy following the usual traditional welcome, Grand Gedeh County Superintendent Peter Solo enumerated a number of measures county authorities put in place to keep the county free of the Ebola disease.
