Workers of Gbarpolu Hospital Join Strike Action
By Emmanuel Mondaye, Gbarpolu County Correspondent

BOPOLU, Feb 17 (LINA) - Dozens of patients at the Jallah Lone Medical Center in Bopolu City, Gbarpolu County, have been asked to leave the hospital in line with a strike action by the National Health Workers Association.

The hospital's Medical Director Trokon Washington  told the Liberia News Agency at the weekend that the hospital started sending patients away on February 14, and he expected the center to be empty a few days later.

He explained that on Monday, February 17, the doors to the hospital will be closed to the public until the administration can receive the go-ahead from the Association leadership in Monrovia.

According to Director Washington, while it is their responsibility to save lives, equally so, the government needs to realize that they are professionals who must be treated with dignity.

He disclosed that when the hospital is closed down on Monday, all health workers in the county would leave duty until the issue of incentives and other benefits are officially addressed by the government.

He said the strike action would not only affect the only referral hospital but also all health facilities in Gbarpolu County.

Meanwhile, several relatives of surgical and other patients at the hospital have expressed fears that they may die if nothing is urgently done by the government to avert the situation.
