ECOWAS 47TH Ordinary Session Opens; Extols Liberia’s Ebola-free Status

MONROVIA, May 19 (LINA) - Ghanaian President and Chairman of ECOWAS,  Dr. John Dramani Mahama, has commended President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for her extraordinary leadership and commitment in the fight against Ebola, culminating into the World Health Organization’s announcement declaring Liberia Ebola-free.

According to a Dispatch from Accra, Ghana, President Mahama made the remarks in his opening address at the 47th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS held at the Accra International Conference Centre.

The Ghanaian leader also praised the government and people of Liberia for their resilience and determination in rallying around President Sirleaf’s administration in ridding Liberia of the deadly Ebola virus.

He noted that although challenged by the obtaining circumstances in neighboring Guinea and Sierra Leone, it was imperative for the world to stand by Liberia and the sub-region towards building a resilient post-Ebola health system.

The Ghanaian President thanked the international community and friendly nations for the outpouring support and assistance to the region.

In separate statements, the Chairman of the ECOWAS Commission, Kadre Desire Quedeago and the United Nations Secretary General Special Representative for West Africa, Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, lauded Liberia’s milestone achievement, but cautioned that it was too soon to celebrate given the prevailing situation in Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan received tremendous applause for his courage and maturity in leading Nigeria through an unhindered transition.
