Togolese President Opts For Consorted Efforts In Post-Ebola Era

By Prince Nagbe, LINA

MONROVIA, May 11 (LINA) – Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé has said forming collaboration with Guinea and Sierra Leone as well as building a vibrant health sector is paramount to Liberia’s post-Ebola reconstruction effort.

President Gnassingbé noted that it takes strong collaboration amongst authorities of the three most affected Ebola countries and the building of strong health infrastructures to totally eradicate the Ebola virus from the sub-region.

“As long as Ebola is not kicked out of the sub-region, we are not out of the woods yet; it is now time that Liberians remain vigilant and on the alert,” Gnassingbé added.

He made the statement when he served as special guest at programs making the commemoration of Liberia being declared and certificated as Ebola free by the World Health Organization in Monrovia on Monday.

The Togolese head of state thanked the people of Liberia for demonstrating a high degree of resilience in combating the Ebola virus, noting: “We have learned from Liberia’s experience that the heroic effort of nurses, doctors and community workers through community engagements is key to achieving this goal.”

He pointed out that the end of Ebola has opened a new page in Liberia’s post-Ebola recovery drive, a situation that comes as a result of the steadfastness and resilience of the Liberian people.

President Gnassingbé, who is also ECOWAS Coordinator on Ebola, on behalf of the regional body, congratulated President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for her leadership role played in coordinating support from the international community which was essential in ending the Ebola scourge.

Though the hardest hit country in the sub-region with over 4,000 deaths, Liberia is the first in the region to be declared free of the virus by WHO, as Guinea and Sierra Leone are still reporting new cases of the virus.
