Zwedru Community Radio Gets New Board

ZWEDRU, Feb 13 (LINA)  - Superintendent Peter  L. Solo  has  appointed  a  new  Board  of  Directors   for  SMILE  FM,  a  community  radio station  in  Zwedru,  the provincial capital of Grand  Gedeh  County.

The new seven-man board is chaired by businessman Bill White and co- chaired by Washington Yonly, County Project Planner.

The appointment of the board takes immediate effect and will last for the next six months.

Mr. Solo's action comes in the wake of disenchantment among some staff of the radio station over allegations of mismanagement and the manner in which the station is being run.

The  misunderstanding  recently led  to  a   go- slow  action  with the workers demanding  that  the  station  manager, Mike Teteh  Dorue and  Board  Chairman  Philip  S. Greene  step  down  before the station can resume  full  operations.

Meanwhile, the services of all workers have been terminated and those wishing to continue to work at the institution asked to re-apply.

According to the LINA Correspondent in Grand Gedeh County, the station  manager, who  is  at the  center  of  the controversy has been retained,  while  the  fate of  former board  chairman Greene,  who is  reported  to  be  away from the county,  remains  unknown

In a related development, some citizens and residents are questioning the involvement of the county authority in the affairs of the community radio station which they think should be private.

But, a source from the Superintendent's office told LINA Thursday that the action is temporary to calm the tension, while the station manager will be subjected to an audit to determine his fate.
