Local ECOWAS Office Holds Tourney To Commemorate 40th Anniversary

MONROVIA, May 6 (LINA) – As part of activities marking the 40th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the National Office will hold a two-day football tournament in Monrovia this weekend.

The tournament, which is under the joint auspices of the ECOWAS National Office and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, will bring together Old Timers teams featuring prominent former Liberian football stars, government officials and lawyers.

The Head of ECOWAS National Office, Benedict Roberts, disclosed that Montserrado Senator George Weah, National Team Head Coach, James Debbah, the president of the Liberia National Bar Association, Cllr. Theophilus Gould, among others, are some key players to be featured in the tournament.

Roberts named participating old timers teams as ALPHA, Independent, BAME, Paynesville, Barnersville and Bench Old Timers, among others.

According to Roberts, the tournament starts at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, at the Alpha Old Timers Sports Stadium on Duport Road in Paynesville with Independent and Bench Old Timers clashing in the opening game, while BAME will host ALPHA Old Timers in game two.

Game Three will feature Lakpazee and Sinkor Old Timers, while in Game Four, Paynesville will lock horns with Barnersville Old Timers.
