Immunization Vaccines Have No Link To Ebola - Health Official
By Calvin Brooks, LINA

MONROVIA, April 29 (LINA)-The Deputy Program Manager of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) at the Ministry of Health has clarified that the vaccines against measles, polio and mebendazole expected to be administered in May has no connection with the Ebola vaccine trial.

Mr. Adolphus Clarke stated that the immunization exercise was introduced in Liberia since 1978 to protect Liberian children against childhood diseases to ensure that they grow, develop and remain healthy and strong.

Clarke made the clarification Wednesday in an interview with the Liberia News Agency at the beginning of a three-day seminar for County Health Teams and supervisors at a local hotel in Monrovia.

He urged parents and guardians to take advantage of the opportunity to immunize their children against childhood diseases, noting that if they fail to immunize them, they could become handicapped.

He disclosed that 397cases of measles have been discovered in Liberia, resulting in the deaths of six children in three counties, including Margibi County (three); Montserrado (two) and Grand Bassa County (one).

According to Clarke, the exercise is a wake-up call for the nationwide integrated measles immunization campaign.

Clarke pointed out that Grand Bassa County has 160 cases of measles followed by Margibi County with 85 cases and Montserrado County, 73 cases.
