Senator Sheriff Proposes Conference On LTA
By Hilary Vasco Wiagbe
MONROVIA, April 21 (LINA) - Montserrado County Senator Geraldine Sheriff has proposed a meeting of Legislators, GSM Operators, Commissioners of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) and other stakeholders to identify sources of financial support to the Authority.
Sheriff noted that the LTA as a revenue generating entity of the government needs to be supported fully to put it in a position to carry out its functions effectively.
Senator Sheriff made the proposal Monday after LTA Chairperson Angelique Weeks told the Senate Committee on Posts and Telecommunications that the Authority is under-equipped due to lack of support during a meeting at the Capitol Building in Monrovia.
She indicated that the statement by Weeks was counter-productive to efforts being made by government to improve the telecommunications sector, adding “such is not in the interest of the Liberian people.”
Meanwhile, Sheriff, who is also a member of the Senate Committee on Posts and Telecommunications, has urged the LTA leadership to map out strategies that will allow the average Liberian access to communication, and deter GSM service providers from exploiting them.
