Chief Wants Hand Pumps, Wells Upgraded

By D. Ignatius Roberts, LINA Grand Cape Mount County Correspondent

ROBERTSPORT, April 20 (LINA) - The Paramount Chief of Garwula District in Grand Cape Mount County has called on government and partners to rehabilitate the 20 hand pumps and wells in the district to provide safe drinking water for residents.

Chief Jartu Sheriff told the Liberia News Agency in an interview recently that these facilities were jointly constructed by the Liberian Government and international NGOs, but got damaged during the 14-year civil conflict.

According to Sheriff, residents of the district have been fetching water from unsafe creeks and other water sources for drinking and other household uses, but expressed fear that “this could create an outbreak of diarrhea and other illnesses in the district.”

She said numerous appeals made to the government and international partners for the provision of safe drinking water have so far proved futile.
