Senator Taylor Proffers Ways To Change Minds, Behaviors
By Robert Dixon, LINA

MONROVIA, March 31(LINA) - Bong County Senator Jewel Taylor has urged the government to review State laws, programs, plans, incentives and punishments to control violence in the society.

She also called on government to adopt comprehensive measures to address gender inequality and raise public awareness through media education about violence against women and its consequences.

According to the Liberia News Agency, Senator Taylor made the call Tuesday when she served as keynote speaker at a one-day National Stakeholders Dialogue on Rape, held at a local hotel in Monrovia.

Speaking on the theme “Rape as a Threat to the Survival of Women and the Advancement of a Nation,” she urged government to put measurable and accountable mechanisms into place to gauge behavioral changes, and craft new laws that provide for better protection of women, such as the Sexual Offense Act.

“This should include budgetary allotment for programs and support to victims of violence,” she noted.

Senator Taylor also call on government to create an environment in which special attention will be paid to victims’ families and to encourage an increase in community disdain for acts of violence.
