Land Commission Chair Urges Passage Of Land Rights Act
By Johnson Bobby Liway, LINA Grand Bassa County Correspondent

BUCHANAN, March 28 (LINA) -The Chairman of the Land Commission, Dr. Cecil Brandy, has urged members of the National Legislature to pass into law the Land Rights Act submitted to that body by the Land Commission.

Chairman Brandy said due to the importance attached to land ownership by citizens and the problems associated with land, the legislators should ensure passage of the Act to calm problems relating to land ownership or acquisition across the country.

The Land Commissioner made the call at a one-day Legislative Retreat on the Draft Land Rights Act organized by the commission in the port city of Buchanan, Grand Bassa County Friday, which brought together lawmakers, commissioners of the commission and civil society organizations.

Meanwhile, Dr. Brandy has called on the Legislature to increase the budgetary allotment of the Commission to enable it carry out its statutory mandate more effectively.

He admonished them to support the commission in ending the long-standing disputes over land, a situation that has caused loss of lives and properties in the past.

“This is something that is of paramount concern to Liberians across the country,” he stressed.
