China Union To Downsize Foreign Workforce
By Richard D Baysah, LINA Margibi County Correspondent

KAKATA, March 28 (LINA) - The Management of China Union, an iron ore mining firm in Bong County, has disclosed plans to downsize its workforce by the end of the year.

Making the disclosure in an interview with the Liberia News Agency on Friday, China Union General Manager, Mr. Cloud Gao said the downsizing exercise will, however, affect only Chinese workers and not its Liberian
staff.

Cloud noted that the downsizing of Chinese employees by the company is intended to give way to the employment of more qualified Liberians by the company.

He indicated that the company’s decision is advised by Section 11.1(a) of the Mineral Development Agreement which provides for the employment of qualified and competent Liberians to top managerial positions within the company.

He disclosed that the company currently has in its employ a total of 260 Chinese and 432 Liberian workers, and as such there was need to increase the number of Liberians in keeping with the mandate from the Government of Liberia.

Cloud said the downsizing exercise will give way to the employment of more Liberians, but called for restraint as the company is committed to ensuring more employment opportunities for Liberians.
