MSF Shuts Ebola Care Unit Due To Drop In Cases

MONROVIA, March 25 (LINA) - The management of the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has closed its ELWA-3 Ebola Treatment Unit (ETU) near Monrovia, due to the decreased number of cases.

The institution headed by its emergency coordinator in Liberia, Mariateresa Cacciapuoti, revealed that it is now preparing the facility to hand it over to authorities of the health ministry, which will run it as a temporary treatment unit.

According to a release issued Wednesday, the entity indicated that though it understands that the fight has not yet ended, it is pleased with the level of positivism the country has achieved thus far in the fight.

The release states that the closure does not represent the cessations of MSFs engagement against Ebola, but would enable it conduct emergency preparedness of training in rapid isolation and treatment of Ebola (RITE) for County Health Teams in Bomi, Cape Mount, Nimba and Montserrado Counties.

Though there is one confirmed case, the MSF urges Liberians and partners to remain vigilant and ready to respond to any eventuality that could change the number of positive cases.

Since its (ELWA-3) opening in August with 250 bed space, it admitted 1,917 patients. A total of 1,234 were confirmed positive of the virus, with 801 deaths and 512 survivors.

The facility is billed as the largest ETU built during the peak of the Ebola crisis.
