KAKATA, Feb 8 (LINA) – The Commissioner of Larkayta Township, Omega Sawyer, is appealing to government to construct an elementary school and install a hand pump in Gwapay Town in Gianmusue Clan, Gibi District, Margibi County.
Speaking in an interview with the Liberia News Agency in Larkayta Township Saturday, Commissioner Sawyer said the lack of a school in Gwapay Town is seriously hampering the educational needs of school-age children in the area.
He said Gwapay Town comprises of total of 61 houses with a population of 276 of which about 200 are children of school-going age.
According to Commissioner Sawyer, Gwapay Town also lacks safe drinking water, thus compelling residents to walk miles to fetch water from streams, especially during the dry season.
He lamented that Gwapay, a community within the concession area of the multi-billion dollar iron ore mining company, China Union Investment, lacks a school and safe drinking water facilities..
Meanwhile, Sawyer has expressed fears that when China Union commences full-scale mining activities, it will affect most of the streams used by residents of Gwapay Town and other towns and villages in the concession area.
