Senator Says Audit Of Ebola Funds Underway
By Winnie Dixon, LINA
MONROVIA, March 19 (LINA- The General Auditing Commission (GAC) is conducting an audit of all funds received by government to combat the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), Senate Health Committee Chairman, Dr. Peter Coleman, has disclosed.
He made the disclosure during regular session Thursday in response to a communication from Grand Bassa County Senator Nyonblee Lawrence dated March 19.
Dr. Coleman noted that the audit will include all funding received from local and international partners to buttress government’s effort to eradicate the disease.
“The GAC could not conduct any audit in September as earlier requested by plenary because the safety of the citizenry was paramount and as such, all focus went on defeating the virus and saving more lives,” Coleman said.
He, however, failed to say when the audit began and when it will end as well as the total amount being audited by GAC.
According to the Liberia News Agency, attempts to reach Dr. Coleman by telephone after session to comment on the issues proved futile as his phone was switched off.
However, Senator Lawrence has maintained that the body needs to be briefed every step of the way by the GAC to enable Senators feed their constituents with the information when the need arises.
