Acting Justice Minister Pats UNMIL for Security Gains
By Richard Stephens
MONROVIA, Feb 7 (LINA) -Acting Justice Minister Cllr. Wheatonia Dixon Barnes has praised the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) for improvements it has brought to the Liberian security sector.
She said the UN Mission has been instrumental not only in the restoration, but sustenance of peace in Liberia.
Cllr. Barnes made the commendation at the end of a two-day Judicial and Justice Joint Hub program held in the central provincial capital Gbarnga City in Bong County.
Cllr. Barnes stressed that as UNMIL prepares to reduce its forces in Liberia, Liberian security forces must remain vigilant in the performance of their functions, noting that in the absence of UNMIL, the country’s security would fully rest on their shoulders.
Barnes, who is also Deputy Justice Minister for Administration and Public Safety, commended the Panel of Experts set up by the United Nations few years ago; to review the country’s security sector and set up a security network to replace the UN Mission as it pulls out of Liberia.
She pledged Government’s fullest commitment to work with the UN Mission in Liberia, and emphasized the need for Liberians to remain grateful to the UN for its activities in the country.
