Pres. Sirleaf Lauds Americans For Ebola Support

MONROVIA, February 27 (LINA) – Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has praised the United States Government and People for the immense support given Liberia in the fight against the deadly Ebola Virus Disease. 

“I am here in Washington, DC to say thank you,” she said, citing “the depth of friendship, remarkable partnership and exemplary leadership” which Americans showed in joining Liberians on the frontlines of the battle against Ebola.

“My brothers and sisters of neighboring Guinea and Sierra Leone, similarly afflicted by this outbreak, join me in expressing our heartfelt thanks to all of you,” President Sirleaf observed.

She was speaking at an event hosted by Congressman Chris Coons and the U.S. Institute of Peace in Room 216, Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC on Thursday as part of a three-day official visit to the U.S.

President Sirleaf noted that it was at the “precarious moment”, early in August, that she reached out to the government and people of the United States, writing to President Barack Obama and called on friends in Congress asking for America’s support.

“Well, America responded. You did not run from Liberia. As this great country and people continue to do with many of our global challenges,  America stood up, and America stood with us, providing the critical resources and partnership to enable us fight back.  And that’s exactly what the Liberian people did,” Sirleaf pointed out.

She observed that although Liberia was not altogether out of the woods, Ebola is no longer an unknown predator hunting the Liberian people, and appreciated the U.S. for its support that has enabled Liberians to “now be hunting down Ebola.”

Meanwhile, President Sirleaf will hold talks with President Obama at the White House today after meeting Secretary John Kerry at the Department of State as part of the official visit.
