Taylor Lauds Pres. Sirleaf Over Gender Equity

By Ballah M. Kollie/LINA

MONROVIA, February 20 (LINA) –Bong County Senator Jewel Howard-Taylor has lauded President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for her countless contributions to the enhancement of gender equity.

She said the Liberian leader’s support has fulfilled the dreams and aspirations of women in Liberia and the world over.

In her induction statement as Chairperson of the Women Legislative Caucus of Liberia (WLCL), Senator Taylor promised to keep alive the dreams of women, and called for the support of her male counterparts in sustaining the campaign for increased women representation at all levels of the Liberian society.

“Keeping alive the purpose and vision of the Women Legislative Caucus amounts to the continuous fight for gender equality and women’s rights across the country and the creation of a stage where both genders will have the opportunities to realize their full potentials, remains a challenge,” noted the Senator.

She vowed to collaborate with her inducted colleagues in instituting a robust and achievable action plan that will galvanize the necessary resources for the success of the caucus and women across the length and breadth of Liberia.

Meanwhile, Senator Taylor has challenged men to support women through the sharing of information, expertise as well as ensuring that government’s programs and policies are gender sensitive.

In remarks at the ceremony, Gbarpolu County Senator and Senate President Pro-Tempore, Armah Zolu Jallah, pledged the Senate’s support to initiatives of the women caucus.

Established in 2006 under the administration of Africa and Liberia’s first democratically-elected female president, the WLCL is a network of women from diverse backgrounds in Parliament.

Others inducted along with Senator Taylor were eight other female lawmakers, including Senator Geraldine Doe-Sheriff, Lofa County Representative Mariama  B. Fofana and Grand Bassa County Senator Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence as Vice Chairperson on International Affairs, Secretary and Vice Chairperson on National Affairs, respectively.
