Pres. Sirleaf Urges Female Lawmakers To Lift Women Voices

By Prince Nagbe/ LINA

MONROVIA, February 20 (LINA) – President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has called on the leadership of the Women Legislative Caucus of Liberia (WLCL) to make their voices and those of other women heard by passing into law key gender-sensitive legislation.

The Liberian leader also urged the WLCL to make their voices stronger, in spite of the difficulties and opposition, adding: “It is in you the women of this country we see a symbol of hope for the future and as leaders, you cannot let us down.”

President Sirleaf made the statement at the induction ceremony of the Women Legislative Caucus of Liberia held in the Rotunda of the Capitol Building in Monrovia on Thursday.

“Your theme ‘Achieving Gender Equality and Women Empowerment’ is a manifestation that our democracy will not be complete when those of us who make up more remain outside the mainstream of participatory democracy,” she noted.

She challenged the officials of the caucus to advocate for and advance the cause for women involvement in the governing processes of the country, noting, “This calls for the dedication of affirmative action.”

The Liberian leader noted that though Liberia made history by electing the first African female president, “we cannot afford to lose our guide in the massive fight in achieving gender equality.”

She stressed the need for the women of Liberia to “reflect, recommit and rededicate their efforts in reaching out to market and rural women, meeting with the young girls on the streets, talk less and work more to achieve our goals.”
