LACC Invites Deputy Speaker To Aid Oil Money Probe

By Hilary Vasco Wiagbe/LINA

MONROVIA, January 22(LINA) -The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) has invited Deputy House Speaker Hans Barchue to aid the body probe the use of US$1.2 million given the House of Representatives by the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL).

The money was intended to enhance nationwide consultations by members of the House of Representatives with their constituents on the New Petroleum Law in 2013, according to the Liberia News Agency.\

In a letter to Barchue as Chairman of the Consultation, the LACC said it believes he could provide useful information and a comprehensive expenditure report of the money.

The LACC’s letter, dated January 20, 2015, was signed by D. Blamo Kofa, Chief Investigator and approved by Cllr. Augustine Toe, Vice Chairperson and Acting Executive Chairperson of the LACC.

It was read in Session on Thursday, January 22, and forwarded to the leadership of the House for discussion next week.

The LACC also requested the Deputy Speaker to bring along copies of the US$1.2 million budget, vouchers and other relevant documents, and go with his legal counsel to the investigation which is slated for Friday, January 23, 2015.

Barchue refused to comment when asked by reporters on grounds that the issue is currently before Plenary and the leadership of the House.

It can be recalled that the House of Representatives embarked on a ‘Nationwide Consultation Meeting’ in 2013 to solicit the input of Liberians across the country on the New Petroleum Law of Liberia with support from NOCAL.
