Pres. Sirleaf Orders Probe Into Public Works, LTA Contracts

MONROVIA, Feb 4 (LINA) - President Ellen Johnson has ordered a full investigation into all standing contracts between the Ministry of Public Works and construction companies in the country.

The President has also directed all current and former officials of the Ministry of Public Works as well as all companies concerned to cooperate fully with the investigation.

An Executive Mansion release, quoted by the Liberia News Agency, said President Sirleaf took the decision following a meeting Monday evening with officials of the Ministry of Public Works.

The release said the Liberian leader took the decision to ensure that Government gets the full value for the money being charged under the contracts.

Meanwhile, President Sirleaf has accepted, with immediate effect, the resignation of the Deputy Minister for Technical Services at the Ministry of Public Works, Mr. Victor Smith, who resigned Tuesday after last night’s meeting with the President.

President Sirleaf has directed former Deputy Minister Smith to remain in the country and cooperate fully with the investigation.

Smith is reported to have signed all of the contracts under investigation.

In another development, President Sirleaf has frozen the accounts of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), and suspended the US$1 million lease agreement between LTA and a Chinese company, Qinjian International, for a building it intends to secure as an office.

The President said the action will remain in force until an investigation establishes no wrong doing.
