NPA Revenue Grows Amidst Ebola Outbreak

By Prince Nagbe/LINA

MONROVIA, January 16 (LINA) - The National Port Authority (NPA) has recorded a modest increase in its revenue for fiscal year 2014, amidst the outbreak of the Ebola virus in the country.

The NPA recorded a revenue increment of one percent from US$26,597,250 to US$26.9 million.

Making the disclosure at the Ministry of Information regular press conference in Monrovia on Thursday, NPA Managing Director Matilda W. Parker said the revenue increase was partly a result of Ebola preventive measures put into place by the port’s management.

Parker noted that as a result of the increment, NPA increased its support to the 2014/2015 National Budget by 100 percent to US$2 million.

She revealed that the Freeport of Monrovia, which is the country’s main port, handles over 58 percent of Liberia’s vessel traffic while the Port of Buchanan handles 56 percent of NPA’s Summer Dead Weight and 65 percent of the Authority’s throughput.

The NPA official also said the Port of Greenville saw a 55 percent container traffic increase from 2013 to 2014 by 103 containers, while the Port of Harper, the smallest port within the NPA’s network and handler of only domestic trade, saw vessel traffic increase by 28 percent.
