Senate To Hold Election In 30 Days

By Winnie Dixon/LINA

MONROVIA, January 16 (LINA) - The Liberian Senate is expected to hold elections for four vacancies created as a result of the Mid-term Senatorial Elections within 30 days, beginning January 15.

The elections are pursuant to Rule 19 Section 3 of the Senate’s standing rules, which indicate that in case the Pro-Tempore is removed, the Liberian Senate shall elect a successor within the period of 30 working days.

The rules also indicate that senators interested in the post shall declare their intention through writing to the Secretary of the Senate within 20 days and the secretary will circulate all declarations to the membership not later than five days prior to the elections date.

During the election, the senate would have a single agenda item that focuses on the election, and the President of the Senate shall preside, or in the stead, the Secretary of the Senate.

The December 20 Mid-term Election saw the defeat of Pro-Tempore Gbehzongar Findley, Chairpersons on Executive, Clarice Jah, Rules, Order and Administration, Lahai Lassanah and Ways, Means, Finance and Budget, Sumo Kupee.

There has been no declaration of intent on the floor since the vacancy announcements.

Since the inception of the 53rd Legislature of the Senate in January 2012, this will mark the second election of a President Pro-Tempore of the Upper House.
