Citizens Obstruct ArcelorMittal Operations

By Wellington Patrick, Nimba County Correspondent

MONROVIA, Feb 4 (LINA) - Citizens of communities in ArcelorMittal operational areas in Nimba County on Monday, February 3, obstructed the mining firm’s operations in demand of compensation for farmland and crops it destroyed in the communities.

The protesting residents blocked the road between Zolowee and Gbarpah at the Mount Tokadeh junction, leading to the pit where the company is currently mining iron ore.

The spokesperson of the aggrieved citizens said the affected communities were “angry” with the iron ore mining giant because the company has continued to drag its feet in paying compensations for crops and other property destroyed as a result of its operations.

The spokesman said ArcelorMittal took note of the damage done to their property a few months back, but has reneged on the payment schedule given the residents.

Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Nimba County, Christiana Dagadu, has intervened in the standoff and asked the management of ArcelorMittal to halt the bureaucracy and pay the farmers their just compensations for crops and farmland destroyed or barricaded as dangerous zones.

At the same time, ArcelorMittal Nimba County Communications Officer, Jerry Mwangbe, has said that the company’s official decision to resolve the situation is yet to be made public, but  expressed optimism that the company will meet the farmers' demands in the not distant future.
