Gov’t Resumes Rehabilitation of Prison Inmates

By Richard Stephens

MONROVIA, Feb 2 (LINA) - An official of the Ministry of Justice has disclosed that Government has resumed the rehabilitation of prison inmates around the country.

Assistant Justice Minister for Rehabilitation and Corrections, Hilary Sirleaf, said the inmates are usually trained in disciplines such as agriculture, soap-making, tie-dying, electricity, masonry, carpentry and plumbing, among others.

He told the Liberia News Agency Saturday that when these inmates are professionally trained, they would become useful citizens and contribute to the reconstruction of Liberia.

According to Mr. Sirleaf, the objective of establishing the Bureau of Corrections is to help correct Liberians who have gone astray by violating the law and help to transform them to become useful to their country.

Assistant Minister Sirleaf also noted that most of the inmates were willing to return to normal life by acquiring vocational and technical knowledge.
